¡Felices Fiestas Patrias Perú!
A last minute July 28 escape from Lima to Oxapampa for Peruvian Idependence Day. Located in the upper jungle areas (‘selva alta’ or ‘ceja de selva’) of the eastern slope of the Andes, Oxapampa is the capital of a small province of 80,000 people where agriculture and cattle ranching dominate. It is known for its unique German-Austrian heritage and traditions: sloped-roofed wooden houses, Tyrolese polka dancing and strudel are all normal parts of the setting. After the municipal parade and a few ranch events, we celebrated the date dancing to a local cumbia band with a checkered-shirt crowd at the Oxapampa Social Centre, including a special appearance by a mariachi band. ¡Feliz cumpleaños Perú!
