India 2010

After receiving admission to graduate school in Stockholm, I seized the opportunity of a friend getting married in Mumbai to leave Toronto early in spring 2010 for an extended trip through India.

This selection represents my efforts to live photography as a continuous learning process in parallel to the flux of travel. It had the potential to attune my relationship with my surroundings and perhaps even go beyond documentation and capture what I was feeling.

Faced with the incredible cultural depth of the landscapes I encountered, naturally photographing people in their environment became my single guiding principle. What my images also ended up reflecting was that as a young man travelling alone, I was mostly meeting other men. Touched by the fraternity and camaraderie I experienced, I got new perspectives on male roles in this complex society barreling towards modernity, and in my own in the north.

This trip marked the beginning of my blog East of Heart, and an exploration of how words and photographs combine to tell stories.
